I have said before that I like Austin Sevens whether they be original factory models or specials like this lovely Ulster replica which was bought in 2011 as a bodyless chassis complete with running gear, engine & gearbox.
The file contains an interesting collection of invoices for components and services used in its construction including a Compound Curvatures high quality replica Ulster body with a new fuel tank and cycle wings.
There are detailed invoices from PJS Classic and Racecars of Burton-on-Trent for items bought and work done on it in 2013 and 2014 which included shortening the chassis to correct Ulster length and installing a new set of flat springs.
A Phoenix steel crankshaft was fitted with new bearings and new white metal connecting rod bearings. The high compression Ruby cylinder head was skimmed, the combustion chambers were enlarged to accommodate bigger valves and the block was fitted with new valve guides plus the bores were honed and new oversize piston rings fitted. It has a Rayburn inlet manifold carrying an SU carburettor, a fabricated three branch exhaust manifold and a Bosch distributor and they also made a correct new radiator core with a new Nickel plated radiator shell being supplied by Marque Restore of Coventry
In addition PJS rebuilt the hydraulic brakes with new components, stripped and rebuilt the steering box, stripped and rebuilt the back axle with new axle and differential bearings, the front axle was rebuilt with new kingpins and hub bearings, a new oil pressure gauge, electronic rev counter and speedometer were fitted and they made new seat frames and fitted a new leather covered seat back and cushions.
The present owner who bought the car in 2017 had his on-site expert engineer give the car a thorough check over and there are Seven Workshop invoices for a number of consumeable items he used as part of a thorough service so the car is all ready to drive away and enjoy!
Given this history of work done it will not surprise you to hear that this is a really good replica Ulster. It is very well put together and it really looks the part. Out on the road it feels very together with no rattles or untoward noises and it drives well with strong performance. It has a very easy to use four speed and reverse gearbox, good steering and more than adequate brakes – this is a car you can enjoy driving for the sheer fun of it and I am sure it will acquit itself well on rallies and driving tests etc. so please do feel free to come and have a look at it.
