Year 1904
Description Originally formed in 1883, De Dion Bouton initially produced steam vehicles then progressed to motor tricycles and quadricycles before producing their first motor cars in 1899. The company were great innovators and produced advanced machines which no doubt helped establish them as one of the most successful manufacturers in the early days of motoring. This is readily demonstrated by the significant number of De Dions listed in the VCC Members Handbook as well as the large proportion of them which take part in the London to Brighton run every year. There is always a good reason why cars are popular and even a short run in this VCC dated example will demonstrate why people really like this particular make. The car is a real pleasure to drive with its easy to start 8 hp single cylinder engine giving plenty of power, its simple to operate clutchless three forward speed plus reverse gear box plus its good brakes and nice positive steering - all in all the car gives you a feeling of confidence in its ability to take you where you want to go. Its four seat rear entrance tonneau coachwork comes with a windscreen and a Surrey top and on a chilly or damp day it soon becomes obvious just how pleasant it can be to have some weather protection. Furthermore De Dion's popularity and high survival rate make it economical for a specalist like Austin Parkinson to make and supply parts for them - there can't be many Veteran Cars with that sort of back up service. Please do come and see it but be warned you will probably want to own it!
